CSS lists "No Indent"

I have a list.
I like lists.
Search engines like lists.

I like Css.
Thus my relationship with the list continues.

Sometimes my lists chuck a tantrum. Enter my most recent obstacle:

The Indent

In order to remove the indent from a list I tried align tags, applying styles and Divs with varying attributes. Let me save you the time. The above solutions don't work well and are not consist across all browsers.

Charging in on a white horse here comes ..

The CSS

UL {
list-style: none
margin-left: 0;
padding-left: 1em;
text-indent:-1em;
}

Note: Margin-left + padding-left = 0 Don't seem to do anything on their own. It is the minus 1 em as the text-indent that holds the power here.
